CHATEAU DE GAVRAY

THE CISTERN

Between the two construction areas visible today on the platform, one can see, dug into the ground, a cistern, almost completely filled. It has retained its interior plaster and part of its vault. In a nineteenth-century description, there is mention of the traces on the ground of gullies bringing rainwater to it.

The cistern is an essential element for the defence of the castle. In the event of a siege, it was necessary to be able to supply men and horses with water. It can be assumed to be very profound.

An account of 1324 reports the purchase of a

"Brand new and shod bucket for the tank".

It is amusing to note that we know the date of purchase of a bucket, and its price, but we know nothing about the physiognomy of the buildings that were located here...

The interior of the cistern; You can still see the base of the vault that covered it. One can imagine it deep to ensure the water supply in case of a siege.
