SOME OBJECTS DISCOVERED

The cobblestones

Discovered during the excavation of the house, they reflect the care taken in the decoration of this area and therefore its importance.

These luxurious pavers were made "slip-on". This technique consists of stamping the paver with a matrix that leaves a hollow.
An illustration of this stage can be imagined by seeing the rest of the cobblestone at the "chessboard castling" which would have remained deliberately without slipping.

Paving stones with the "Roques d'échiquier".

The second step consists of filling the hollows with the yellow glaze.

There is another method where the tile is dipped into the glaze and then stamped. The two steps are then combined into one.

The patterns are classic from Lower Normandy. Thus the fish in a shuttle ends up at the Abbaye aux Hommes in Caen.

The production sites were located in Bessin or Pays d'Auge.

Some motifs are clearly designed to be joined together, for example, in a rosasse, a frieze or to form contrasting patterns.

Pavement found. Frise possible.

Dark patterned paving stone. Similar paver but with light patterns (Very worn).

The diversity of the decorations and the possible combinations for these cobblestones makes it easy to imagine the impression of majesty that one must have had when entering these rooms.
